Premium grade coconut shell granular activated carbon (GAC) is the most effective method in removing organic contaminants from water. Organic substances are composed of two basic elements, carbon and hydrogen. Because organic chemicals are often responsible for taste, odor, and color problems, GAC filtration can generally be used to improve aesthetically objectionable water. GAC filtration will also remove chlorine/chloramines. GAC filtration is recognized by the Water Quality Association as the acceptable method of maintaining certain drinking water contaminants within the limits of the EPA Drinking Water Standards. Organic Arsenic, Organic Chromium, Organic/Inorganic Mercury Complexes, Benzene, Endrin, Fluorine, THM's, 2-4D, Styrene, Toluene, as well as many other complex chemicals are reduced/eliminated by GAC. The MSER signal from the solid state circuitry flows to a solenoid coil wound around the main supply pipe. This coil develops our patent pending multiple modulation frequency field that immediately neutralizes the hardness producing dissolved calcium carbonate. This process is independent of the flow rate within the pipe. Full treatment is accomplished for variable demand flows. i.e.: Refilling a toilet tank to a wide open faucet. The net result: functionally softened water with greatly increased calcium carbonate solubility. TYPICAL USER EXPERIENCES:
INSTALLATION: The Water Guard unit requires a 110/220 VAC power outlet within five (5) feet of the installation. The best location for installation is immediately after the water meter, before any plumbing line tees, so the entire plumbing system gets lime descaled. The unit may also be installed outdoors at a well head for example, if it is weatherproofed. If used on a well, we recommend installing the unit on the pressure tank outlet line. Because the unit is a solid state device, it can be mounted in any position needed. Please remember for best effect apply to plastic or copper lines. Galvanized can be handled but, the power of the unit needs to be increased to offset the dissipation of power. It is highly recommended to use plastic or copper only.For slab-built homes with an outdoor water meter, we suggest mounting the unit indoors and run the signal cable through an exterior wall to the pipe using an easily sealed ¼ " hole drilled through the exterior wall. If you have a salt based softener, just unplug it and bypass the plumbing. Note: You must bypass the softener plumbing. All calcium stored in the ion-exchange bed will quickly re dissolve causing a real flood of extra hard water. Water Guard treated water will act on the stored calcium just like it is lime scale ... it really will re dissolve it! The treated, neutralized, water immediately starts dissolving scale buildup in the pipes. The scale comes off one molecule at a time, just like it went on. Filters and screens don't plug up. If you have never used a softener before, you are in for a real treat. Your water will feel silky, and you will notice that your hair rinses "squeaky clean" after a shampoo. Former salt based softener users will also appreciate this good feeling, with none of the slimy "I never feel quite rinsed clean" stuff anymore. If you have replaced a salt based softener you may notice the water becoming harder as piping scale begins dissolving and wonder, "what have I done?" This re hardening is a consequence of the descaling. It will improve daily as the existing scale melts away. The plumbing took years to get the way it is, and it only takes a short time to clean it up. We also recommend draining your water heater regularly. If you use a dishwasher and replaced a salt based softener you may notice calcium spotting. This will diminish to the residual level of the calcium present in your water supply when the descaling is finished. In the mean time, add a half cup of household vinegar to the rinse cycle to eliminate any spotting problems. By the way, any spots will now easily wipe away they do not etch. You will also notice that really hard to clean lime scale on toilet bowls, tubs, and glass shower stalls will come off much more easily after the first several weeks of use. A side benefit of Water Guard treated water is that naturally present micro-organisms causing black mold in the bath area will diminish, or go away completely. Another common problem is scaling caused by back splashing on faucets and shower enclosures. Because there is no direct water flow across these surfaces, un-like inside the pipes, the old scale must be manually removed. Once cleaned, new accumulations of aragonite will wipe off easily. FIRST NINETY TO 180 DAYS: All descaling should be completed and you will be left with soft water from every tap and also, clean pipes. More Of How The Water Guard Works In order to understand how the Water Guard inhibits scale buildup, breaks down and eliminates existing scale; it is necessary to understand the nature of scale and how it is formed .Scale Formation The two most common forms of scale consist mainly of: 1. Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) and magnesium carbonate (Mg CO3) with binders. This scale forms in hot water heaters, boilers, heat exchangers, valves, piping, chillers, cooling towers, etc. 2. Rust (in galvanized pipes) or corrosion (in/on copper, brass, aluminum, or chrome). The Nature of Calcium Carbonate and Magnesium Carbonate Scale (with Binders) Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) exists in nature as limestone and marble. Silica (SiO2), alumina (Al2O3) and calcium sulfate (CaSO4) are principal impurities in limestone and function as binders. Large deposits of magnesium carbonate (MgCO3) exist in the nature with calcium carbonate in the form of dolomite (CaCO3 - MgCO3 ) or as magnesite (MgCO3). Limestone layers were formed over millions of years from remains of sea creatures precipitated to the bottom of the ocean where the CaCO3 contained in these remains combined with silica (SiO2), alumina (Al2O3), and/ or clay (SiO2 - Al2O3 - 2 H2O) which serve as binders. In addition, limestone usually includes some MgCO3. CaCO3 is only very slightly soluble in water, yet large amounts of calcium become dissolved in water supplies by the action of rainwater on limestone. Rain water is some what acidic because as it falls through the atmosphere, it encounters carbon dioxide (CO2) with which it reacts to form carbonic acid (H2 CO3 ) as follows.

The addition of H+ ions from the carbonic acid reduces the concentration of CO32- (ions that go into solution in the water from the CaCO3 solid) because the H+ ion and the CO32- ion combine to form the slightly ionized bicarbonate ion, HCO3-. The reduction on the CO32- ion in the solution causes more CaCO3 to dissolve in the form of Ca2+ + 2 HCO3-in an attempt to saturate the solution and produce a product of the concentrations of Ca2+and CO32- ions that equals the solubility product. ( [Ca2+] x [CO32-] = Ksp = 1 x 10-9 at 25ºC) Surface waters also dissolve carbon dioxide from soils where it is produced by the slow oxidation and decay of organic materials . As these waters contact limestone, the limestone gradually dissolves. Examples of this action are limestone caves and hard waters from wells. The Ca2+ + 2 HCO3- that is dissolved in water very readily converts into CaCO3 when water is heated to boiling. The solubility of CaCO3 decreases with the increase in temperature and precipitates as CaCO3 as follows:
This basic reaction forms the bulk of the "lime" in water heaters and boilers. This reaction also occurs when water-containing Ca (HCO3)2 evaporates and leaves a CaCO3 residue. The above mentioned reactions also apply to magnesium and its bicarbonates and carbonates. For example: Mg CO3 + H2CO3 Ô Mg2+ + HCO3- However, MgCO3 is appreciably more soluble than CaCO3. [Mg2+] x [CO32-]=Ksp = 1 x 10-5 at 25ºC Scientists' and engineers' studies of scale formation in various industrial systems have determined that CaCO3 and Mg CO3 form most of the mass lime-type scale. However, the mass requires silica (SiO2), alumina (Al2O3) or calcium sulfate (CaSO4) to act as a binder to hold the mass in place just as in nature. CaSO4 exists in ionized form when dissolved in water as the ions Ca2+ and SO42-. The solubility of CaSO4 increases with temperature up to about 100ºF and then decreases with increasing temperature. Hence, precipitation of CaSO4 also occurs in water heaters and boilers. SiO2 and Al2O3 are not ions but are relatively neutral colloidal residues that are slightly soluble in water. SiO2 is found in fresh water in a range of 1 - 100 mg/liter. At high concentrations (over 50 mg/liter), chemical precipitation appears to occur. Colloids, including SiO2, Al2O3 and clay (SiO2 - Al2O3 - 2 H2O), when suspended in water usually carry a negative charge. If these negative charges (extra electrons removed), the colloids coagulate, precipitate, and combine with (i.e., become absorbed by) CaCO3, Mg CO3 and CaSO4 to form typical lime scale. The denseness and hardness of the scale increases with increased concentrations of SiO2, Al2O3 and/or CaSO4. Approximately 87% of the earth's crust consist of silicon compounds. Silica is on of the most abundant compounds of silicon. Aluminum is the most abundant metal and the third most abundant element. The most important ore of aluminum is bauxite, a mixture of hydrated aluminum, Al2O3- 3 H2O, and iron oxide. Calcium is fifth in abundance of the metals in the earth's crust, of which it forms more than 3%. Water Guard's Action Water in a solid state (e.g., ice), the molecules and ions therein are held in a relatively rigid pat-tern. But in a liquid state, this structure becomes a dynamic, whirling, chaotic dance in which groups of molecules and ions in the solution take turns whirling about one another, breaking their bonds, and finding new groups with which to partner. As the water rushes through the Water Guard, the pattern becomes more frenetic and electron orbits and associated bonding under go increased perturbation and stresses because the Water Guard's proprietary technology induces additional electrons into the water solution. Addition of Electrons to the Water Solution and Their Effects on Scale As the water passes through the Water Guard, the electrons being induced into the water solution displace some already captured by ions such as CO32-, HCO3-, SO42- and OCI- during the turbulent orbiting of the various electrons. This allows the "displaced" electrons to become "free electrons" in the solution. Ions or colloids such as Ca2+ and Mg2+ free themselves of CO32-, SO42- and HCO3- by capturing these "free electrons" . Once freed Ca2+ and Mg2+ assume their neutral atomic structures (Ca0 and Mg0) and break away from their ionic bonds while in solution or from lattice scale bonds in cases where they are in solid precipitated or scale form. The increased electron count in the water also inhibits the breakdown of the bicarbonate ion into H + and CO32- when water is heated or when alkalinity reaches levels above pH 8.4. By acquiring or reacquiring a negative charge, colloidal substances such as silica, alumina and rust particles remain in suspension instead of becoming absorbed into calcium, magnesium and iron ions. The acquisition of the negative charge also causes these colloidal substances to be repelled from these ions in the flowing water. This separation inhibits the hardness effects of these ions -- hardness in water is always due to the presence of Ca2+, Mg2+ and/or Fe2+ ions. The silica and alumina are also able to escape from scale lattices to which they have been absorbed and functioning as binders. Thus, the scale lattices are gradually broken down and eliminated by escaping Ca0 and Mg0 elements and negatively charged SiO2(-) and AI2O3(-) colloids. The scale dissolving effects in water heaters, boilers, pipes, valves, other plumbing and agriculture components are summarized by the following equation: (13) CaCO3 - CaSO4 - SIO2 - Mg CO3 - Al2O3 - Fe2O3 + 9 eÔ2 Ca0 + Mg0 + 2 CO32- + SO42- = SiO2(-) + Al2O3(-) + Fe2O3(-) The acquisition of one or two electrons by a calcium ion (Ca 2+) will immediately cause other substances to bond with it. The H+ ion is a strong force in the breaking down calcium carbonate. If small or weak concentrations of the hydrogen ions are added to the water solution, carbonate ions are removed by the formation of bicarbonate ions. (15) H+ + CO32- Ô HCO3 The bicarbonate ions are then decomposed by the hydrogen ions as follows: (16) H+ + HCO3- Ô ; H2O + CO2 The Ca(OH) + formed in equation (14) will probably bond with an electronegative ion or radical or with a colloid with a negative charge, but will more than likely remain in solution instead of forming part of a precipitate. The Ca(OH)2 formed in equation (14) tends to precipitate but its solubility is approximately 40 times greater than CaCO3. Because of the relatively slow rates at which the Ca0 and Ca(+) is formed, and proportionally slow rates at which Ca(OH)2 are formed, it is unlikely the concentration of Ca(OH)2 in water heaters and boilers (including cold water circuits) will reach levels where precipitation will occur. The solubility of Ca(OH)2 at 100ºC is 0.77 gram per liter; for CaCO3 , it is 0.0190 gram per liter at 75ºC. At 25ºC, the solubility of Ca(OH)2 is 1.85 gram per liter; for CaCO3 , it is 0.0153 gram per liter at 25ºC. Conditioned water that dries on surfaces exposed to the air will leave water spots due to the minerals in the water (just as soft water conditioners will leave sodium spots), but these spots are easily removed with a damp cloth and do not leave hard water stains. This is due to the neutralization of the scale binders and the calcium and magnesium (see equation (5)). The Wetter Water Effect An important benefit of adding electrons to the water solution is the reduction of hydrogen bonding between H2O molecules. H2O molecules link up to each other because of the dipole nature of the H2O molecules. The additional negative charges in the solution reduce the bonding of the oxygen atoms of H2O molecules and hydrogen atoms of other H2O molecules (i.e., hydrogen atoms other than those in their own molecules) by supplying the negative charges (electrons) that the oxygen atoms attract. Therefore, there is less hydrogen bonding between the individual H2O molecules. This action is sometimes referred to as the reduction in "surface tension". This reduction in "surface tension" means "wetter water". Wetter water means better cleaning water and better soil-leaching water. The breaking up of the H2O groupings into smaller groupings enables soap and detergent to break up into smaller groupings and interface with smaller H2O groupings. Since, surface area increases exponentially with decreases in the size of the groupings there is greater surface area that meets dirt and contaminants in wash water. Consequently, soaps, detergents and shampoos become more efficient and considerably less amounts are required. The wetter water also penetrates soil better and faster. Further, the wetter water along with the scale-dissolving abilities of Water Guard treated water results in effective breaking down and leaching away of the salts incrusted on the soil surface and in subsurface of the soil. Excessive salinity on and around the plant roots cause tip burn on the leaves of plants and trees. Because wetter water covers a larger surface area, such as the surface area of a plant leaf, irrigation water usage is reduced. Rust and Corrosion Inhibiting Rust is a type of corrosion involving the special case of iron Rust requires three electrochemical steps: (1) Loss of metal occurs at the anodic area (anode) of the surface. In the case of iron, iron (Fe0) is lost to the water solution and becomes Fe2+ ion. (2) Because of the formation of Fe2+, two electrons are released from the Fe atom and flow to a cathodic area (cathode). (3) Oxygen (O2) in the water solution moves to the cathode linking with the two electrons in step (2) to form hydroxyl (OH-) at the cathode. The reactions are as follows:
(2) Cathodic reaction: ½ O2 + H2O + 2e- Ô 2(OH-) (3) or e- + H+ Ô H0 If oxygen is absent, hydrogen ions (H+) participate in the reaction at (3) above to complete the electrical circuit. The Fe2+ and OH- ions combine to form ferrous hydroxide as follows:
Rust is formed when Fe (OH)2 is oxidized:
Corrosion is inhibited if the iron is made more negative compared to its surroundings, forcing the anode to act as a cathode. The Water Guard obtains this result by the supplying of excess electrons into the solution. Thus, the ionization of the Fe atoms is prevented. The additional electrons also dissolve rust by breaking it into fine colloidal particles that go into solution. In a similar manner, corrosion is also inhibited and dissolved for metals other than iron such as brass and aluminum. Rust can also be formed and deposited by iron-depositing bacteria in the water such as Sphaerotilus and Gallionella. Iron-depositing bacteria converts ferrous iron into insoluble ferric hydroxide (Fe(OH)3) that become part of the mucilaginous sheath around the cell. These cells deposit on galvanized pipes and accelerate corrosion rates. The action of the Water Guard also causes the Fe (OH)3 to break up into fine colloidal particles. Summary The Water Guard provides electrons to the water solution. This enables electrochemical changes to occur that: (1) inhibit scale and corrosion formation; (2) dissolve existing scale and corrosion; (3) increase the wetness and cleaning power of water; (4) break down and leach away excessive salts from soils. |

Water Guard This sections offers additional product background information regarding the origins of the technology, and some specific technology applications. Non-chemical descaling was first observed by a Scottish physicist in 1894. One day he noticed that a laboratory plumbing line, originally very lime scaled, was suddenly scale free. He questioned everyone about who did what, when, and where. An assistant had placed a magnet next to the plumbing line a few weeks earlier. After some experiments, the physicist came to believe that magnetic fields were somehow involved in descaling. This discovery started developments spanning the next hundred years, covering permanent magnet systems and arrays, unmodulated AC electromagnetic field technologies created by the Russians and their allies, and dissimilar metal ionic field effect techniques from central European research labs. These early attempts at non-chemical descaling, 40 odd different patents in all, could, under very specific operating circumstances, produce some descaling. But, no one could really explain how their equipment produced the effects. So, there was an opportunity for exaggeration, and many companies made many wild claims, mostly untrue. Now, there is a US Department of Energy report, # DE86-014306 "Applied Fields for Energy Conservation, Water Treatment, and Industrial Applications" available from the US government National Technical Information Service at 1-800-553-6847. In this 1986 study USDOE scientists mention the puzzling variability of results that they obtained. Sometimes magnets and electromagnets seemed to work, to descale, and sometimes they didn't work at all. All of this history leads to here now. The exciting new Water Guard developments leapfrog old understandings. We are proud to offer safe, reliable, and effective full time electronic descaling enabled by proprietary multiple modulation low energy field techniques. Because the descaling happens by changing calcite, or lime scale, into the aragonite crystal form of calcium carbonate we also get functionally softened water. This is water that acts soft, feels soft, and some say tastes soft. All of this is without any chemical adulteration of the water. Plants, animals and people can safely drink the water, while soaps bubble vigorously, clean better, and normal cleanup is lots, lots, easier. In addition to doing all of this, our Water Guard also contributes to reduced energy consumption and reduced air pollution by descaling your water heater, the single biggest "hidden" energy waster in the typical US home. It's interesting to note here that outside of classified military research there has been very little published material about applied electromagnetics. To achieve effects similar, but not of the same magnitude, as our proprietary multiple field modulation techniques a whole series of permanent magnets or unmodulated field electromagnets would need to be placed at variable length increments along a pipe. This approach will produce a maximum of 65% calcite-to-aragonite conversion if, and only if, the flow velocity is twenty feet per second through the magnetic field, and the field flux density is on the order of 2000 Gauss magnitude for a ¾" ID pipe. The Water Guard technology can produce 100% calcite-to-aragonite conversion at flow velocities of as little as 6 inches/second through a 0.2 Gauss field. Then there are the Russians, who have successfully employed high power AC field technologies to treat lime scale problems in their power plants for the last 30 years. Unlike the US, Russia does not have a significant chemical industry, so chemical water treatment is absolutely out of the question for them. Yet, they still have lime scaling. So, both permanent magnet and unmodulated AC electromagnetic field technologies were researched and then developed. These technologies are presently being employed throughout the former Soviet Union. One of the Russian approaches uses technology requiring a radiated EM field strength of 12 Tesla. One Tesla equals 10,000 Gauss, meaning that the Russians use an EM field of 120,000 Gauss, whereas the Water Guard 2000 uses only 0.2 of a Gauss. Clearly the Water Guard technology is far more efficient, and cannot impose any EM radiation hazards. These very high powered Russian devices are employed primarily by power generation plants because they can A.) afford the power costs, and B.) their workers are already familiar with the consequences of high level EM field exposures and so, know how to work safely around them. Separately, the Russians employ various permanent magnet devices in other areas. Most of the Russian commercial marine fleet vessels are now equipped with magnets on their boiler feed water lines, and all Russian hospitals are required by state law to magnetically treat their potable water supplies. The primary reason that the permanent magnet and unmodulated AC electromagnetic devices perform poorly here in the USA is that those technologies require a fluid velocity of 6 m/sec (20 feet/second) through the field in order to achieve their optimal results. Here in the USA all public water utilities adhere to the AWWA, American Water Works Association, guidelines for water supply line sizing practice. These guidelines call for limiting water velocities to a maximum of 10 feet/second in order to avoid various undesirable hydraulic and/or mechanical ramifications. Most US residential water supply systems are sized to operate at less than a 10 feet/second flow rate, which is more than adequate for the typical residential application. In a practical real world sense this means that all permanent magnet devices cannot possibly provide adequate treatment because there is insufficient flow velocity for them to be effective. The Water Guard employs a bona fide advancement in the science of water treatment. Again, Water Guard differs from all of the previous devices by using low power EM field modulation techniques. This permits treatment of the water regardless of flow velocity or volume. None of the earlier technologies could do this, and no other can do it now. Water Guard offers guaranteed dissolved calcium carbonate neutralization that is independent of the fluid flow velocity. Again, our reference here is our minimum 6 inch/sec flow in a ¾" ID pipe, which is ¾ GPM. The practical ramifications of Water Guard water treatment extend far beyond mere softening. The descaling action has a huge cost reduction impact for commercial property operators. Just compare the costs for replumbing an older 20 story apartment building versus installing a Water Guard system. Or, consider almost any industrial process water application, like machine and mold die cooling for injection molders, who spend lots of time and money dealing with the side effects of lime scale. Then, there are the agribusiness applications for Water Guard treatment. For starters do irrigation systems, especially drip emitter systems, suffer repeated lime scaling problems? Do dairy operators need to control "milkstone", calcium carbonate, accumulations in their stainless steel milking lines? The answer is of course. Conventional lime scale control measures require chemical cleaning, and in the case of the dairy operators it's a daily exercise, else the bacteria count for the milk quickly goes out of sight, thus reducing the milk quality and price. In both of these particular examples, employing Water Guard treatment eliminates the problem without any ongoing chemical costs or environmental pollution side effects. For plant growers, both nursery and outdoors, Water Guard treatment reduces the surface tension of the water meaning that the water acts "wetter", soaking into the growing medium more quickly, Thereby carrying nutrients into the root zone more effectively than untreated water. As a consequence, less water may be used to achieve the same growth rates, or with the same water-nutrient application rates a greater plant growth volume will typically occur. Additionally, the treated water undergoes a typical pH drop of 0.2-0.3 allowing reduced fertilizer chemistry adjustments, and frequently a reduction in the amount of fertilizer needed. There are also several abstracts of reports from Technion - Israel Institute of Technology, Haifa 32000, Israel, which document greatly enhanced vegetable and fruit quality, improved appearances, higher sugar contents, yields that were increased by an average of 23%, an overall faster growth rate, and a reduction of the required fertilizer. All of these documented effects were achieved with nothing more than appropriate magnetic treatment of the supply water versus otherwise identical control plots. The fruits and vegetables grown in these studies included: Lettuces, Cabbages, Cucumbers, Squashes, Tomatoes, Sweet Corns, and finally Muskmelons (cantaloupes). Water Guard is a 12 VDC circuit. So, using one with a solar powered, off grid, home system is simple. The caveat is that as delivered the unit operates twenty four hours a day. For a solar powered application we recommend using a water line flow sensor installed in the piping downstream from the unit to avoid calcium scaling that will quickly render an inline sensor inoperative. The inline flow sensor will energize the Water Guard unit as a function of the actual water demand, conserving the meager power reserves normal in solar power applications. In the final analysis, it appears that there are truly significant benefits to be gained from employing the Water Guard technology in most human water consuming activities, from the simple softening of hard water to the descaling of piping and industrial equipment, to numerous water consuming agricultural applications. We know of no other technology with so many applications that is as cost effective and nonpolluting as is the Water Guard.

By incorporating nanotechnology in the production of water conditioning media, Melstream Industries is producing a line of medias that are multi functional and extremely efficient. Basics of Molecular Nanotechnology Ordered structures of atoms lead to the production of certain materials. This basic structure is also known as a template. Example: Black graphite and clear diamonds are both carbon. The only difference is the atomic structure of the carbon atoms. It is possible to create a template in such a way that it creates a desired product. The basic template consisting of only a few atoms is two-dimensional. The final product is three-dimensional. This molecular nanotechnology is not to be confused with chemical reactions where new chemical bonds are created, or the redox process which uses up. Molecular Nanotechnology Applied to Water Conditioning LaPure Water is able to create a certain atom structure (template), which leads to the creation of crystals. The first successful molecular nanotechnology developed media by Melstream Industries is RS-S. The RS-S media has a nano surface with ordered atoms creating a template. With a contact time of less than 3 seconds calcium crystals are formed from the dissolved calcium. The result is 100% scale prevention. The second product is the ISF 92 media for the removal of iron up to 35 ppm. Also on this media the surface includes atoms ordered in a special way, creating a catalytic effect. The dissolved iron is transformed into a solid, which can then easily be trapped in a filter bed. The Future of Molecular Nanotechnology The principle of this technology opens exciting horizons of possibilities in water treatment. Melstream Industries has successfully applied molecular nanotechnology to calcium as well as iron. We are currently running tests on several other water contaminants. This creates the first layer of the crystal. The next layer is created by the release of energy of the previous one and so on. TECHNICAL DATA CONDITIONS FOR OPERATION NSF/ANSI Standard 61 Certified RS-S is based on nanotechnology. In this process atoms are placed in a special structure so that a template is created. The nanotechnology is so effective that it requires a contact time of only seconds. The media is used in an upflow system, therefore only an in-out valve is needed. The media transforms the calcium ions into sub-micron sized calcium crystals that are carried along with the water flow. These crystals are visible only if viewed through a microscope. They are completely stable and resist destruction by heat. The crystals will not aggregate or attach to any surfaces. The result approaches the same effect as if the water was free of calcium hardness. The media can be used in systems that run continuously. There are no capacity constraints and regeneration is not necessary. The media is used to protect pipes and hardware from scale and corrosion. It also has a large descaling effect on older systems. Tests with commercial coffee machines showed that those with RS-S protection were much cleaner after one year of use than the control systems which were cleaned monthly. RS-S works great as pre-treatment for membrane filtration like reverse osmosis. It prevents the scaling of the membranes with calcium. RS-S has even been used successfully in de-scaling fouled membranes in as little as ten days.

The media must be used in a downflow system. The iron ions are oxidized in seconds and trapped in the underbed. The underbed must be backwashed with regular well water without any chemicals or salt. For water usage of up to 1000 gal/day a single tank system is sufficient. A two tank system is necessary for water usage above 1000 gal/day. The first tank with the RS-I media and the second tank with an underbed. The RS-I media is very efficient. RS-H is an extremely effective media for the reduction of hydrogen sulfide from water supplies. RS-H can reliably remove hydrogen sulfide upwards of 20 ppm.
Unlike other medias, there are very few restrictions to the applications of the RS-H media. Low oxygen levels, interfering ion and pH have no significant effect on the performance of the RS-H media.
The media is very light and requires no regeneration, only backwashing. The advantage of this media is the short contact time and the small amount of media needed.
The hydrogen sulfide is reduced catalytically to an
insoluble
sulfur precipitate. These precipitates create particles up to 0.1 to 1.0 mm, depending on the amount of hydrogen sulfide present in the water. The precipitates are trapped in the underbed
and easily removed during backwashing. We recommend a short backwash daily
or every two days depending on the amount of
hydrogen sulfide and water usage. Backwashing occurs
with regular well water.
The RS-H media is very efficient. For example a residential application with a service flow of 10 gpm and a peak flow of 15 gpm

Superchlorination - Dechlorination: This process will kill disease producing organisms, iron bacteria, remove iron (the staining, hydrogen sulfide (the smell), and organic compounds. An automatic dry pellet chlorination device is used to feed small amounts of chlorine pellets into the well casing the chlorine chemically oxidizes the iron changing it into (red rust). The chlorine kills disease-producing organisms, oxidizes sulfur, and oxidizes organic compounds (fertilizers, pesticides, etc.). The water remains in the well casing to supply the contact time and The iron and other compounds will settle. The backwashing multi bedded filter will remove the excess chlorine, remove any rust, bad odors and bad taste and any organic compounds (pesticides, fertilizers, etc.). The scale control system is the next to last phase; It contains a very special media that transforms the calcium and magnesium ions (the bad stuff that makes water hard and leaves spots and stains) into calcium crystals. These new crystals are completely stable and cannot attach to any surface. The new crystals are rinsed away by the water flow. The size of the new crystal is so small that they can only be seen through a high powered microscope. Common solar salt is added directly to your swimming pool, at a level of 1 teaspoon per gallon of pool water. As the salt water passes through the plates, a small electric current breaks down the salt into Sodium Hypochlorite and Hypochlorous Acid ("pool chlorine"). Inside the cell, the level of chlorine can reach up to 20ppm, more than enough to shock your pool! But as the super chlorinated water reaches your pool it dilutes down to 2-3ppm, which is the level found best to swim in. The salt is never consumed. When the chlorine depletes, it becomes salt again and the process is recycled. You only add salt when sufficient water has been backwashed or splashed out of the pool (almost 1600 gallons!)
How the LAPURE’S POOL SANITIZER Works What is a Saltwater Pool? In many parts of the world, the addition of solid or liquid chlorine to treat swimming pools, as is the norm in the US, is for the most part uncommon!
Most swimming pools are saltwater pools. These pools should not be confused with saltwater like the ocean -- the amount of salt in the pool is much less than in seawater (in fact, about half the amount in tears). The small amount of salt in a saltwater pool does not remove the need to sanitize the water -- growth of microorganisms and algae are the same problem as for any pool of water. The role of the salt in the saltwater pool is to provide chlorine that is used to treat a traditional US pool, but the sanitizing agent is produced by electrolysis of the salt water solution (this is where LAPURE’S POOL SANITIZER comes in...). Enter LAPURE’S POOL SANITIZER!
The amount of disinfectant generated by LAPURE’S POOL SANITIZER electrolytic cell provides enough chlorine to maintain a high residual amount and can provide a local concentration of chlorine of approximately 20ppm, or more than 7 times the normal concentration in pool water (about 2-3ppm). This elevated presence of chlorine provides a potent environment to kill algae and microorganisms, without the need to raise the amount of chlorine in the entire pool to such a high level. Operation of the chlorine generating cell for 10 hours (typical in the summer months), at 100% efficiency will generate slightly more chlorine than adding a typical one pound bag of shock. What is that Chlorine smell? Owners of LAPURE’S POOL SANITIZER report their pools do not smell like chlorine. The chlorine smell of many swimming pools largely arises due to the formation of chloramines, formed by reaction of the sanitizing chlorine with organic matter in the pool. This organic matter can come from plant waste or waste from swimmers in the pool. Formation of chloramines occurs more readily at high chlorine concentrations, but less well in acidic conditions. The generation of sanitizing chlorine by the electrolytic cell also produces minute amounts of hydrochloric acid; the lack of 'chlorine smell' reported by owners of LAPURE’S POOL SANITIZER is partially due to inhibition of chloramine formation by the acid produced with the chlorine. LAPURE’S POOL SANITIZER® makes your water feel great. Owners LAPURE’S POOL SANITIZER also report the pool water feels 'softer', and doesn't dry out skin as badly as traditional pools. The salt present in the pool serves to help displace the metal ions present in hard water in much the same way that a water softener operates; these metal ions are also removed by the electrolytic process (they build up as a scale on the electrodes, and are washed off during periodical maintenance). Why does my pool have to be sanitized?
If a swimming pool were simply filled with water from a hose, it would soon begin to deteriorate in quality and cleanliness; algae and microorganisms would begin to grow, and the pool would quickly become unsafe to swim in. To maintain the cleanliness of water, it is treated with a disinfectant to prevent algae and bacterial growth. The most common method and accepted method of pool treatment is chlorination, in which the same active ingredient in laundry bleach acts as the sanitizing agent; other methods of water purification involve the use of bromine or ozone.
Why is it necessary to continually add more 'chlorine' to a swimming pool? Ultraviolet light from the sun degrades chlorine, converting it to chloride (like salt, sodium chloride) and oxygen: estimates are that about 90% of the chlorine added to an unstabilized swimming pool is lost due to reaction with ultraviolet light. In order to inhibit such decomposition, stabilizing agents are added to the pool water. The most common of these stabilizing agents is cyanuric acid (a substance totally unrelated to toxic cyanide); Cyanuric acid reacts with chlorine to produce a compound that is not as sensitive to ultraviolet light, and so is not decomposed by sunlight. The reaction of chlorine with cyanuric acid is reversible -- when the amount of chlorine in the pool water begins to drop (due to reaction with microorganisms in the water and ultraviolet degradation, the chlorine contained in the stabilized form is released and replenishes the depleted chlorine in pool water. The regular addition of chlorine to the pool serves to keep the cyanuric acid in the chlorinated form, so the amount of chlorine available in the pool remains constant. If too much stabilizer is added, the amount of available chlorine will be reduced too much to effectively treat the water; as some chlorine tablets provide chlorine with stabilizer, caution must be used to keep the amount of stabilizer in a pool from slowly rising to unacceptable levels.
